Athyrium niponicum ‘Godzilla’ is a giant selection of the beloved Japanese painted fern, native to woodlands across Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China. Where the straight species (and its familiar ‘Pictum’ form) forms a tidy 1–2 ft clump, ‘Godzilla’ explodes to two or three times that size — a massive, arching mound of silvery fronds overlaid with green and wine-purple, more than living up to its name.
Built for the shade garden
Like all Japanese painted ferns, ‘Godzilla’ wants consistent moisture and humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial to full shade; too much direct sun bleaches out its signature metallic coloring. Its sheer scale makes it a striking focal point in a woodland border or beneath larger shrubs and trees, and it pairs beautifully with dark-leaved companions like heuchera, whose deep purple tones echo the fern’s own stems and midribs.
Care tips
Keep the soil evenly moist — this fern does not tolerate drought. Cut back the previous year’s fronds in early spring just before the new fiddleheads unfurl, and divide congested clumps in spring if you want to propagate more plants, since spores won’t reproduce the cultivar true to type. It’s generally untroubled by pests, and its size and toughness make it a standout specimen fern rather than just a filler.

'Godzilla' was discovered as a chance seedling at Plant Delights Nursery in the mid-1990s — believed to be a cross between Athyrium niponicum 'Pictum' and the much larger Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina), giving it the silvery-purple coloring of the painted fern at several times the size, hence its giant-monster name.
